Black history month comes once per year, but Black Girl Magic reigns supreme all year long. When you think of women of color what comes to mind? Warm undertones of red and orange, the aroma of shea butter with a mix of sunshine, but most importantly, undeniably individualistic fashion.

For centuries Black women have been creating masterpieces that haven’t always received the credit it deserved. Many of our ancestors created magic by using everyday items such as bed sheets and burlap sack material to dress themselves and their children to present their best selves to the world.

This past weekend, Ruth E. Carter, costume designer for the hit film Black Panther took home an Oscar in the category of Best Costume Design. While well deserved, we can all agree that this was long overdue. (She also designed costumes for Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing and School Daze)

Because so many stylists and bloggers of European descent are so often highlighted on the forefront, it’s time the brown girls received some recognition. Check out some of our faves below!

Happy Black History Month ladies!
