When Ralph Lauren originally released their collab with HBCUs Morehouse and Spelman Colleges, we were thrilled. Not only were the styles a fashionista’s blast-from-the-past dream come true, but it was an admirable nod to historically Black educational facilities.
While we spent plenty of time fawning over the collaboration, we weren’t entirely sure we’d see a sequel.
Let me tell you, when we heard news of the latest Ralph Lauren collab with HBCUs, we were nothing short of ecstatic.
Again, Ralph Lauren pays respect to Morehouse and Spelman College – only this time, they’re shaking up their image to represent classic Black summer fashion in Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard.
Want the details on this sizzlin’ summer collab that idyllically combines a celebration of Black educational institutions with the art of fashion? Let’s get into it.
Where Was it Shot?
Creating a collection that elevates prestigious Historically Black Colleges while showcasing the beauty of an iconic retreat for Black families wasn’t enough.
Ralph Lauren wanted to take things to the next level by choosing Oak Bluffs as the backdrop for the latest drop, completely embracing the ins and outs of this culturally and historically rich environment – and that’s not to downplay the gorgeous scenery that makes for an ideal background for any photo.
With picturesque beaches, gingerbread cottages, and vibrant streets, Ralph Lauren knew there was no other option but to get situated dead-center in Oak Bluffs. Smart move.
What’s Included in the Collection?
Oak Bluffs is known for being a charming town. Naturally, the line features several charming pieces that are the perfect pairing of classic American aesthetic with the timeless appeal of Black culture.
Within the collection, you’ll find a variety of blazers, sweatpants, and cardigans complete with Morehouse and Spelman logos, all of which give those “collegiate vibes” in the most sophisticated way possible.
As the Ralph Lauren brand describes, “the collection blends coastal leisurewear with campus style through the lens of Morehouse and Spelman Colleges,” which is why you’ll also find fun button-ups, tees, skirts, and ball caps.
In a few words, the Oak Bluffs collection can easily become your go-to for all things summer fashion, whether you’re looking for a sporty and preppy get-up to wear to the tennis courts or something more relaxed to saunter through the waves.
Why is Oak Bluffs so Important to the Black Summer Experience?
If you’re not aware of the history behind Oak Bluffs, you might wonder why this collection is so iconic. Well, a little digging helped me come up with some interesting information regarding Oak Bluffs, and it’s something you’ll definitely want to hear:
Oak Bluffs became a haven for Black travelers and homeowners during the 19th and early 20th centuries, when racial segregation was at its highest point. The spot quickly became known as an area that welcomed Black individuals without the fear of discrimination, allowing for freedom, leisure, and enjoyment that may otherwise be difficult (or nearly impossible) to find.
The town grew over the years into a thriving hub steeped in Black history, which can be seen in the town’s iconic gingerbread cottages and brightly colored Victorian houses that have been passed down through generations of Black families, standing as living testaments to legacy and pride.
Today, Oak Bluffs remains a symbol of Black excellence, a beloved summer destination where Black individuals gather to celebrate their heritage, culture, and history. It’s no surprise that it’s a go-to spot for HBCU alumni too, as it honors not only the beauty of Black style but the spirit of unity, fortitude, and cultural pride.
How Has Martha’s Vineyard Been the Hub for Black Families for Decades, and How Do They Show Up in Our Style?
Martha’s Vineyard, particularly Oak Bluffs, became a central hub for Black families in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The island became a hot spot for escaping segregation and enjoying freedom, togetherness, and good times. Aside from being a beachside gathering full of pride and happiness, it also became the go-to for professionals, artistic individuals, and activists, with visitors ranging from Langston Hughes to the Obamas.
However, you can’t talk about Martha’s Vineyard, namely Oak Bluffs, without mentioning style. Black families settling and visiting in the area have always effortlessly blended relaxation with luxury. It’s a style that feels polished yet personalized, with classic tailoring and vibrant patterns and colors taking center stage. From statement sundresses to linen blazers and pants, Martha’s Vineyard has become symbolic of Black leisure, preservation, wealth, and heritage.
Ralph Lauren’s Collaboration with HBCUs Brings Fresh Oak Bluffs Style
As the brand states, “In creating a collection inspired by this town, we celebrate not just Oak Bluffs as a place, but the spirit of community it represents—one that resonates with anyone who has ever sought a home away from home,” and we couldn’t agree more. Ralph Lauren has truly placed Oak Bluffs and HCBUs on a picture-perfect pedestal, and we couldn’t be more impressed.
