The world of fashion and entertainment have always been mutually exclusive. From red carpets to on-set costume design, our featured model Tobias Truvillion is no stranger to wardrobe switches. You may have caught him on the hit series Empire, Bet’s In Contempt, and even serving a little eye candy as Chante’ Moore’s love interest in her 2017 video for “Real One“. Not only is he starring in these stand out roles on screen, he is also a film producer, philanthropist, and an inner-city youth mentor off-screen who was nominated for an NAACP Image Award in 2008.
We had the pleasure of catching up with the former model turned actor as the Founder of Modern Stitches, Ashley Scarboro styled him for an exclusive streetwear vintage photo shoot earlier this month. Staying ‘tru to the magazine’s mission, it was thrilling to grab classic pieces from Installation Brooklyn. A thriving boutique in the heart of the borough that houses tons of retro and timeless pieces that dawned the shoulders perfectly for Tobias. To garnish and top off our vintage garments we added a few retail pieces to seal the deal. Warm arrays of orange to match his inviting personality accompanied by statement pieces like a leather harness and mustard beanie, truly brought this wardrobe to life.
As we completed the photoshoot at the very busy, yet legendary Grand Central Terminal in New York City, we finally got the chance to sit down and talk fashion Tobias. When asked his favorite era of style, he stated “ I love the 70’s and 80’s. I love the black unity and our identity at that time.” Which resonates through his personal style choices and enthusiasm to support black fashion businesses. Check out the full interview below as we dive into more of what Tobias has coming up for 2019 as well as the crisp images of our style feature.
