Sorry, Santa, but it’s time to step aside. As much as we appreciate all of the hard work and magic you provided, it’s time for a whole new year. And that can only mean one thing: our favorite cocktail dresses, good times with great friends, and of course, some delicious, bubbly champagne.
But walking into a New Year’s Eve party with a few champagne bottles tucked under your arm isn’t exactly “classy” – and let’s not even get started on how it doesn’t quite go with that Instagram-worthy ‘fit you’ve been planning for weeks.
Huh, I guess that’s why a champagne producer originally asked Gaston-Louis Vuitton to create a stylish bag that could hold five bottles of bubbly at a time in 1932.
Oh, wait, you didn’t know that? Yeah, lots of people didn’t – so don’t feel too out of the loop. Instead, let’s take a deep dive into the Noé bucket bag, AKA the champagne-wielding fashion symbol that remains a statement accessory to this day.
When Did LV Create This Tote?
Have you ever dreamt of being the epitome of style while toting around your fave fizzy adult drink? Clearly, you’re not the only one thinking about retaining a modelesque aesthetic while supplying the party with booze – thus, the Noé bucket bag was born.
In 1932, Gaston-Louis Vuitton was approached by a champagne producer. They requested a stylish bag that not only looked fabulous and upscale but could function as a carryall for up to five bottles of champagne.
Of course, Gaston-Louis Vuitton was up to the challenge, and the Noé was handcrafted and designed to perfection.
What Was the Original Design?
Although a bucket bag that can carry a whopping five bottles of champagne doesn’t sound like the height of extravagance, Gaston-Louis Vuitton found a way to make it happen.
The original design featured a unique (yet classic) bucket shape that could hold five bottles of champagne – four standing upright, and one inverted smack dab in the center. The bag was built to be the ideal combination of flexible but sturdy, ensuring the bottles could be transported with ease and confidence. To enhance security, the bag was fitted with a leather drawstring closure – which not only kept the bottles safely snuggled inside but added a touch of sass and class to the appearance.
The interior wasn’t the only thing to brag about, though. On the exterior, you will find the iconic Louis Vuitton monogram canvas design, which is the ideal blend of durability, resistance, and beauty.
Fitted with a comfy and cute adjustable shoulder strap, it’s clear to see why the Noé bucket bag became a staple in the fashion industry far beyond its “champagne beginnings.”
While you can still get your hands on this upscale bag, the new and improved NéoNoé tends to be a trendier pick for the New Year. Released in 2017, this bag takes a more modernized approach to the original bucket bag. Updated features include a smoother and smaller (yet still spacious) structure, contrasting interior lining, removable top handle, and drawstring.
